Florida Vital Statistics Index is available at many libraries throughout Florida. Please understand that this is just an index to original documents located at the Florida State Vital Records Office in Jacksonville. Unfortunately, many microfiche are missing from the library's collections due to the Vital Records office not being able to supply complete sets. Repeated efforts have been made to correct this situation, but no response has been received from their office. Currently, the indexes cover the following records:
Marriages 1927-2002
Divorces 1927-2002
Deaths 1887-2002 (Ancestry.com includes only through 1998)
To learn about the background of vital records in Florida, go to the Florida Department of Health website.
Also, it is advisable to not rely on the state office as the only resource. Often the local courthouse will have other records that have not been filmed especially prior to 1900. Contact:
- The County Health Department for birth and death records. (You will need to go to County Health Dept Sites.)
- The Clerk of Court for marriage records.
- Or the local Funeral Home. Another site: Florida Funeral Homes by city. (Not complete.)
When requesting a copy of the INDEX by mail from one of the libraries listed below, please be considerate.
- Be specific. Give exact year, surname, first name, county (if known).
- Include a stamped self-addressed envelope.
- Be patient. You are not the only customer and sometimes the librarian might not reply 30 or more days. Send a gentle reminder (2nd request) after a reasonable amount of time as elapsed.
- Say thank you and include a small donation ($1.00-2.00) for copies.
